The lecturer for the sixth Friday lecture is Michael Trudgeon. The title of Michael Trudgeon lecture is ‘Ecology of Occupation’. The main point of this lecture is telling about the relationship between human behavior and architecture. there are some great points from Trudgeon through the development of ecology of occupation. The first point is the history of the occupation of space.

Trudgeon mentions about the form is a verb. He explains about the role of form in architecture history and also how the role of the space is changing over the time. At the very beginning is the history of the house. At the first of the story of the house, there is only one room inside a house and also the development of form starts from Italian renaissance and French renaissance which is opposite one and another. This two different understanding give much lesson. Trudgeon mentions that Italian renaissance era more focus on the building exterior such as building perfection (the renaissance itself), figure ground, and particular characteristic of the facade, which is very horizontal. On the other hand the French renaissance more focus on the inside of the building (interior space). These two different understanding create a new understanding about the people engagement through the space. This era leads architect to think about the building inside out and also experimentation through the space.

The next step of the thinking is through the structure of the city. There were arrival of apartment in 17th century. City behaviour and characteristics also an interesting part and give impact in architecture. Population diversity leads architect to think about a multiple room in a house. It was the beginning of the idea of putting more than one room inside a building or a house, and today we call it hotel. The numerous of room produce a thinking about the variation and giving an identity of every room. This is also the beginning of thinking about the sequence of space or people experience through the space. Today we can see the sequence of private and public space on the space. Today a space sequence is extremely important to be shown as part of the design concept. The pictures of the sequence become a language for interior designer to explain the concept. It was adorable invention of the ecology of occupation.

Trudgeon also explains about further thinking is conventions, which is the idea of controlling people activity due to people activity in one area or mapping and a metastasis, an understanding about the pattern of behavior, rituals, and technical processes a s critical actor. This is the boundary of the space application. We can see that is a lot of different use of space depends on the people activity on particular area.

In conclusion Trudgeon in his lecture is explaining about architecture has a strong relationship with human activity in a space. This was proven, because every further research about the ecology of occupation, it leads to more complex architecture. He also explaining about the development of architecture thinking. From the first thinking, which is only focus on the exterior (facade) until the thinking about inside a space. Also, from the thinking about the exterior until the understanding of human behaviour in the space and also human necessity that leads a design that focus on the inside out. Trudgeon also tells about the important of interior and spatial concept. How it engaged with the human activity in the space. Trudgeon also explaining much about human thinking about the space. The development of the concept and the human necessity through the space. The birth of different kind of space depending on people activity inside. This development is giving a depth thinking for designer about the concept for.

Anthony Gill is the lecturer for the last Friday lecture. He is an interior designer that focus on the hospitality design and detail. In this lecture, Gil is explaining about his three main project, which are restaurants, house, and apartment. His design philosophy is about manipulating space to create different experience. The idea of his lecture is making us think about the function of the space. Gil is much explaining about how to use a built site and how we applying the concept into a site, and the most important thing is how people can have same experience on the built site. As an interior design student, we have to ask ourself about the space that we created. Wasting a space to applying design concept is commonly happen, especially during the studies. The realization of the space is one of the most important and also difficult part for designer. Gill is opening my mind to use all the possibility to apply the concept.

Gill also highlighted about the realization of the project. A detail drawing is one interpretation of transferring from imaginative space into a real space. It is when the design go into industry. A great concept dos not mean a great result in the real world. Gill was explaining much about the use of shelves, wall structure, and playing with the height. He recommends and also frequently use shelves on his project. I am interested with the Gill 2nd and 3rd project, which much about the manipulating space.

Gill second project is Vini and Berta restaurant. This is a new best restaurant in Sydney.

I did some additional research for Gill 2nd project project and found it interesting on the lighting. Gill did not explain much about the lighting,. Basically, light necessity in the space will affect people activity inside.

Gill using several halogen light to emphasize activity in the kitchen. He highlighted the important part about the circulation of the space, because there is a kitchen on the space. he emphasize about the access from and to kitchen. Basically, showing kitechen activity is creating different dining experience. It is also show the hygiene part of the retaurant. However, the concern is the air circulation on the space. Nowadays, there are numerous restaurant and bar that using this concept.

Gill last example is his apartment. Again he using shelves as a room divider. All of the room divider mostly is a book shelves. Gill tries to explain how to use a space as much as possible to create the atmosphere.

Manipulating space is a great idea for designer. This is one of trick to create the sequence in particular site. In fact, every site will give designer a boundary to make realization of the design concept.

Gill is applying space transformation during the day to provide more space. In this project, Gill is hiding a bed to save a space during a day and pull it out during the night. This idea is really interesting, due to the residential cost in sydney. The more room means more expensive the apartment, so make temporary partition is one trick to provide family necessity that live in small apartment.

The first lecture speaker is Richard Goodwin. Goodwin is explaining much about the design process. There are some strategy for successful design through Goodwin lecture.

1. Imagination

There are all come from the imagination. Imagination is the most important tool for designer. Through imagination, designer will explore numerous idea to be creative. As an interior student, spatial imagination is important. This imagination will lead designer to produce the atmospheric thinking of the space. Moreover, this atmospheric aspect determines the success of the design concept. Furthermore, human imagination could lead to other possibility for invention.

2. Design Process

Through the exploration there is some transformation that will happen through design process.Design process consist of naming, idea, metaphor, and also function. As a designer, we are creating a lot of opportunity thorough this design process. There is also some failures and slumps through design process. However, these slumps becomes an interesting part to be critique. Designer could built a better result due to these kind of experience.

This is an acceptable thinking. It is because the process allows the exploration of design possibility and also the possible and impossible aspect, that was translated from the concept. As a relation with the subject 86112 the experimentation of the space and all posibillity through drawing and layering will lead for numerous concept and design possibility.

Furthermore, with the advance technology today such as programs that has created to help designer to do design process, designer could do more than what designer could do in the past.

building become a body and now the concern how we transform it and also the city. layered the city will transform the city for the future and ‘growing something into something else’, which is the way of thinking is the way you engaged to the city. We have to think to reuse old building rather than build a new building, because, detail in building could lead for idea extension. for instance is a pattern of a building. It could bring an extension for monorail. Goodwin suggests that ‘do not try something that absolutely new’

3. Client

in doing design process you have to know your position. client is the body of society, so the client reflect the necessity from the society. So, we also have to realize and remember that the client is not us (a designer). Goodwin mentions that ‘public is the main point that married to urban agriculture’

client take the most important position in every project. the interpretation of client requirements is the brief for designer to produce a successful project. The main question in this case is integrating the client and designer thinking. Client comes from different background and some of them have lack of understanding about design concept. How to translate a design language for people that do not know anything about design. This will approach through the communication technique. A design language that we use in presentation is the key element to give an understanding for the client. To produce the design that give them understanding about the design concept

4. Modeling

Modeling is one step to explore some idea and modeling is part of our body as designer. During the modelling process, we do not know what we are doing. Taking seriously make ‘it’ looks simple. Failure through design process is the allowance to you to enter the puzzle or imagination. Goodwin tries to explain that the more experimentation through modeling create larger possibility to do invention. Making a prototype is one option to approach the most identical model before the final product. Jasper mentions that Modelling is the experience with the miniature of the rough final design. The designer will able to explore more and also do more experimentation through the design.

5. Mapping

walk around and do mapping. recording of space and modeling about the public and private space (we need to stay longer). Designer experience through the site will give more information about the space. Goodwin mentions that it is necessary to ‘walk around and do mapping’ through the space.

This week lecture speaker is Adam Jasper. Jasper took Japan Architecture (Tokyo) as an expression of the idea to deliver his thinking. Jasper shows the strange and wonderful part of Tokyo. In this lecture, Jasper explains about several question through art. He explains about the body of art. The first one is art with purpose, this is an art that human purposely made or it is an ordinary art and the second one is hyper art

The first point is the purpose of a design. jasper mentions that every design must have a function and purpose. In some ways, most of designer is thinking only about the concept, which is the main idea of the design and have not a depth thinking about the possibility and the purpose of that particular design. Basically, good design purpose is indicating a succesful design. Thus, there are a lot of design that was made can not be realizing or it was built but useless. However, some of them is becoming an art. Jasper give an example of Formal Japanese Gateway. This kind of gateway usually found in Japan. Jasper mentions that this gateway is useless, but maintained. In fact, this gateway is a symbol of Japanese gateway in general thought. This is becoming an art, because it is an icon for Japan. Jasper tries to emphasize the important of the purpose of the design in different way. There are some good point about the examples on the lecture. Jasper tries to deliver the idea in opposite direction.

Jasper took an extreme example to deliver his idea. However, in the real life, the useless design is not much realize by human.

On the other hand, Jasper also emphasize about hyper art. A hyper art is an object of art that is accidentally made, but nobody make it. Genpei Akasegawa explains that ‘it is an ordinary and useless object on the street, but it looks like conceptual art’ (Thomasson, 1987). Jasper choose Gary Thomasson is a as example to explain his concept. Briefly, Thomasson is a baseball player, who play for Japan baseball club. He plays in every match, but he is doing nothing on the match. Thomasson is a great example to defining an art for both useless design and also a hyper art. mentions that a hyper art has some criteris such as once was functional, but it is not functional now, glamorous, which is something we cannot reach, and also maintenance.A hyper art usually found in random area. For example, Jasper explains about the stain on the wall from public telephone that has been removed. This stain is becoming an hyper art. This is also an art that do not have any purpose. This hyper art usually taken from photography. I found it interesting that this hyper art could become an insipartion for artist and designer.

This image was found on my site. This is one kind of hyper art, because it gives me inspiration and also telling the story about the site. I found it has a strong hyper art, because this piece of art could lead me to find a new design concept.

Teresa Stoppani from university of brings the seventh lecture. The theme of her lecture is the ‘Dust Reversals’. She explaining about the idea of the dust becomes a design concept.

The characteristics of the dust itself leads the experimentation through the physical and the history. Stoppani Project was produced base on the thinking about ‘grayness, obsolence, and boredom’. Stoppani tries to explore about the relationship between dust and space through interior and exterior.

Dust has interestig history that would leads for more experimentation. According to Stoppani, the characteristics of dust was used in several painting. There are several painting that telling the story or using dust as an inspiration. For example is ‘The picture of Deane – Hover (1972)’.

Dust also have a relationship with the technological obsession in UK. It has strong relationship with European culture. It is showing the story of the great invention of vacuum cleaner and also depict the woman war with the dirt. Dust change culture in time in Europe, such as a traditional cleaning habit and dust relationship with woman, who did war with the dirt (dust) on that era.The woman obsession of removing dirt (dust) create a new mark for the dust, which are relating with shifting and sorting. In physical characteristics, dust could create a pattern through material, theme, modules and also can be removed disturbance of order. Indirectly dust is a piece of art.

In my opinion, Stoppani was interested with dust, because it has strong relationship with interior spaces. Stoppani conclude that the dust is changing attitudes and also a tracing of interior and activity. In fact that, dust is commonly found and also a familiar object in real world. Stoppani mentions that dust making a boundary between exterior and interior spaces. Dust becomes a communicator of interior spaces and activity inside. Stoppani tries to emphasize this relationship between dust and interior spaces.Stoppani tries to mentions about the history of art from past could lead a new story for the future. Making invention from the past experience and also take an advantages of an object as an inspiration for a design concept.
